Contribution for the History of the School Theater at Funchal: The Liceu Nacional do Funchal (1931-1963)

Abstract

This article’s purpose is the study of Theater in a school context, during the “Estado Novo”, in Portugal. Our main sources were the yearbooks from 1931 till 1963, produced by “Liceu Nacional do Funchal”, which was the high school’s designation at that time. In order to do this article we began by studying the importance of theater and some of its characteristics, in that period of time. Then, we focused on the Arts, in this specific high school, analyzing the different moments of the presentation of its various arts, like the School Choir and “Horas da Arte”. Afterwards we centered in analyzing the recitals of the “Liceu”,
in a non-extended study, but referring its main singularities. We ended by presenting a chart of all the plays represented in that specific period of time and place.
