In 1905 a schola cantorum was created at the Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo with the purpose of promoting the practice
of plainchant and sacred vocal polyphony according to the model established in the motu proprio of Pius X. The purpose of this
paper is to reflect on the events that led to the foundation of this school, the relation between the diocesan Seminar and the
school, as well as those involved in this process. The text also analyses questions relating to the teaching of sacred music from
the motu proprio of Pius X and the implementation of this same model in the Diocese of Angra do Heroísmo and its practical
application through the Schola Cantorum, particularly through the method of plainchant teaching.
