The focus of this paper is to contribute to the clarification of the concepts of formal and informal practices in music education, highlighting the pedagogical thought of some well-known researchers such as Edwin Gordon, Lucy Green, Keith Swanwick and David Elliott. The discussion and analysis of these theoretical perspectives aim at the reflection and questioning of the very concepts of “formality” and “informality” in music teaching. In this sense, the ultimate goal of this essay is to launch a more realistic and objective discussion about the reality of music education, which might be simpler than the complexity of the recent theoretical debate has suggested.
