This article tries to explain, in a succinct form, a set of themes relevant to the current context of Madeira traditional music.
With all the social, economic and cultural transformations in the background, contemporary music tackles a new attitude, i.e. a reflective and critical need, from a multidimensional set of factors.
However, the discussion about globalization, read "[...] the world as «global village» [...]" (Appadurai, 1996: 45) and regionalization, that is, the "[...] particularities or local cultures [...]" (Featherstone, 2001: 84), in terms of music, will need to consider a combination of two concepts in which a conservative culture gives birth to a hybrid culture, in the sense of modernity.
Given that evolution can only be made through cultural programs of renewal, experimentation and critique (Canclini, 1992), it is in this context that the new technologies arise, specifically the musical software in the classroom.
Therefore, this article proposes a reflection and a debate from a cultural perspetive.
